Spring's Arrival?

Cindy R • March 2, 2021

Did I miss the first day of Spring?

It was brought to my attention yesterday that meteorologically speaking Spring began March 1st.  I was driving in ice and snow again, so it sure didn’t look like Spring was here.  People have marked time by the seasons for thousands of years so it never occurred to me that there was a meteorological version and an astronomical version. But I looked it up and it is true. However, the meteorological version is based on the annual temperature cycle. I don't think the this version has any value to a farmer. The astronomical version is based on the position of the earth to the sun and that's important to us. So for a farmer the one to rely on is the astronomical version which means Spring will arrive with the Spring Equinox on March 20th.  I'm hoping the warmth of the sun will mean that the snow will be long gone!
